Times Of India: Entrepreneurs at home

Entrepreneurs at home: They may not go out to work but these moms juggle two jobs with ease.

Times of India Issue 20th March 2010 : Excerpts

Chennai: If you thought holding down one job was too much, then how about trying two? Well, these women, who juggle two jobs along with being mom, make it seem like a cakewalk.

Freelance writer Deepa Sekar, 34, might spend her days trying to meet deadlines but once that’s done, she gets to work on her first love — making paper jewellery. “I always loved making little gift items and in 2008,

I started crafting jewellery from paper. I put up pictures on a photography site and got enquiries, so I started a blog to take orders. Now I ship to clients all over the country and abroad,” says Deepa.
There are many like Deepa — doing what they love, at their own pace and making money off it too.  For most of these at-home entrepreneurs, the internet opens up opportunities as well as gives them the flexibility to choose their own hours. Shefalii Dadabhoy, who gave up her career as a corporate banker when she got married, does most of her photography work online.  Like Shefalii, who advertises through a social networking site, Deepa also uses only the internet. “I work from home because it allows me the freedom to work at my own pace and lets me spend time with my son,” says Deepa, whose jewellery is also sold in a couple of outlets in Chennai. “I realised I could turn my hobby into a business venture when someone asked me to make paper earrings for her daughter’s birthday party,” she says.

Now she earns a tidy sum every month from exhibitions and retail sales.  Deepa has already got advance orders for Navratri, apart from launching a new range of kalamkari-meets vegetable-dye earrings.
